News From the Hot Shots Committee

Well, the New Year has certainly started full of excitement and news. Hot shots are operational once again!!  Mrs Melinda Smit is the Chairlady, with Vincent Drew Vice Chairman and Sam Nzuza the secretary. Committee members are: Ryan Sandwith, Richard Becker, Minnie Mjilo and Nondo Majola.

We have also had some staff changes; we said a sad goodbye to Bobby Warnock and welcomed Mr Dave Leroux in his place.  Mr and Mrs Smit joined the ranks during July 2008. Thirteen new children joined us this year; we wish them well and hope that they will be very happy.

Our new Prefect Body consisting of :- Head Girl – Stella Rieth, Head Boy James Howes; Prefects, Charles Newborn, Rebecca Coetzee, Ayanda Msimang, Tyrell Padayachee, Jürgen Hohls and Simon-Paul Zagt entertained us with an impromptu concert with all newcomers.

It was a super evening with newcomers standing on a chair and introducing themselves to everyone with 3 marshmallows in their mouths!

Mr Leroux had to eat a Marie Biscuit  spread with Peanut Butter and run around a chair whistling! Ms Lisa-Marie Kotzè and Miss Adele Jonker had to get an apple out of a dish of water with their mouths, hands behind their backs, only to find that when they came up for air, a very mischievous Rebecca dusted them liberally with flour.

Mr Pete Smit and his lovely wife Melinda were blindfolded and invited to put lipstick on each other’s lips; ugh what a mess, but not half as bad as Miss Mariska van Wyk who was painted with gooey sticky chocolate mousse!

Valentine’s Day was upon us before we knew it and everyone prepared for it with gusto!  Mrs Lucile Commons provided learners and guests alike with a lovely supper of sweet-and-sour pork, rice and vegetables. This was followed by a scrumptious dessert of chocolate brownies, cream and chocolate with a generous side order of Mrs Sheila Halls famous delectable meringues!  Guests were Mr and Mrs Eddie Meyer, Mr and Mrs Geoff Baxter and Rev Ron and Mrs Christel Hall. During dinner Christine Hermens treated everyone with the nostalgic Titanic song, which she sang beautifully.

On Saturday, 14 March, the ‘Hostilians’ enjoyed their own Pop Idols Competition amongst a lively group of boarders who stayed in over the weekend.  We could not believe how amazingly talented the contestants were nor how they managed to choreograph such incredible routines in such a short time!

The intrepid Mr Leroux was the presenter (of course) and had everyone in stitches. Our judges were look-a-likes of the originals. They were Ayanda Msimang alias Mara. Charles Newborn took the part of Simon Cowell very seriously indeed.  Mfundo   Mngomezulu did a rather good impression of Randall and Miss Adel Jonker took the podium as the cantankerous Sharon Osborne.

We had some amazing acts with a Hip-Hop dance routine by Mango Groove. An entertaining performance by Alfred and the Pussycat Dolls. A Gospel singer and even a rap performance.

Then we were all stunned by the   phenomenal vocals of Christine Hermens whose talent and performance ‘wowed’ the judges. (Well at least they all agreed on something). Christine walked away as the overall winner and we are sure she will treasure her new found fame and fortune. (Well she did not win a fortune - but if we could we would have showered her with millions).

Nolwazi Khumalo, the Rapper and Nondumiso Luthuli, our lovely gospel singer, came in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Thanks to Mr Leroux for making the evening such a lot of fun and of course we could never have had a great evening if we did not have the contestants, so well done guys!  You were great sports.

To sum up. It was another fantastic Hostel experience to remember!
